Wow! Systemic Racism Got An EGOT!

Systemic racism—yes that systemic racism—received it's Tony this week, meaning it has joined the vaulted ranks of EGOT receivers. Only seventeen entities have had such a distinction, and systemic racism joins the ranks with several centuries of hard work. We sat down with systematic racism this week to chat. The following transcript has been lightly edited for clarity and slurs.

Wow, you’ve really had a year.

I know. I think a lot of people are reporting that I was an overnight sensation, but they’re discounting the fact that I started in this country like 400 years ago. I mean even as recently as the early 2000s, I was kind of written off as “bad policies of Bush.” But I was still working, baby! And honestly, since everyone’s got a phone now it’s even easier to make it obvious how hard I’ve been working. 

What are your next plans?

Oh everyone asks that of me, but honestly, the sky is the limit. I really doubt this administration will be different than any of the previous ones—if anything, the unbelievable brazenness of this administration is really what lead to my final award. Sure, everyone knew that I was responsible for the fact that most shows are white-led and white-written and white audiences, and good luck if you're trying to do an all-POC Shakespeare reboot

Where do you think your success comes from?

Everywhere. I’m inspired by people at all levels: from the lowliest security guard looking extra carefully at some girls at the mall to the highest levels like a private equity manager refusing to help a black family manage their assets. I find that by being open to all sorts of experiences, and never thinking of myself as too big or long gone for anything, I can accomplish well everything. 

Do you have any advice for any young fledgling forms of racism?

Swing for the fences. Go for broke. Never stop believing in yourself, and all that you’re capable of doing. GO FOR IT BABY!
