Yikes! Obscure Music Buff's Favorite Song Featured In Toyota Commercial

LOS ANGELES, CA—Much to his dismay, Jeremy Parker, a 35-year-old music aficionado, recently heard his favorite song in a car commercial.

"I was sitting in bed, scrolling on my phone when I saw the ad," details Parker, looking despondent. "There it was. My jam. Playing in the background of a Toyota commercial."

A self-proclaimed music nerd and audiophile, Parker has always been passionate about discovering unique sounds. He prides himself on his eclectic taste, often introducing his friends to underground artists and unusual genres. But now, Jeremy is struggling to come to terms with the fact that his beloved music is no longer his own.

"I feel like such a poser," he laments, scrolling soundcloud for new songs with less than 100 plays. "I mean, what kind of music expert’s special song is used to sell RAV4s?! It’s embarrassing."

Luckily for Parker, his friends have been surprisingly sympathetic.

"I honestly don’t think it’s a big deal," says Parker’s friend Brianna Nikles. "The 2007 iPod nano commercial didn’t stop me from listening to '1234' by Feist! If anything, I enjoyed it more. Who cares?"

But Parker can’t shake the feeling that his reputation has been irreversibly damaged.

"I’m worried that people will think I’m basic now," he confides. "They’ll look at me and say, ‘Oh, he’s that loser who likes the song from the car commercial.’ My street cred is gone."

Despite his misgivings, Parker says "music is life" and he has no choice but to soldier on. He has started compiling a new playlist, one that he hopes will impress even the most discerning of music fans.

"I’m in the process of putting together a mix that includes Folktronica and German Reggae bangers with some Pirate Metal, Glitch Hop, and Skweee tracks thrown in,” he says ambitiously. I’ll show the world that I’m the same music connoisseur I’ve always been, and I’ll choose a new favorite song that hasn’t been sullied by the evils of commercialism, even if I have to produce the track myself."
