SNL Staff Still Only Halfway Through Kanye West's 200-Page Set Design Proposal
“I want to communicate 70 years of culture in 3 minutes. Also, I need the entire stage to be on fire.”
~ Kanye West
This is just one of many such requests from the 200-page set design proposal recording artist Kanye West sent the staff at SNL. West is set to perform for the show’s season premiere on September 29th.
“Usually things like this are pretty simple. Just, ‘Hey put the bass over here? Hey, maybe some green and yellow lights.’ Like, how the hell am I supposed to get Minister Farrakhan here and build a podium for him made of ivory? It’s just unreasonable,” said set designer Eugene Lee. Lee has worked with Kanye three times before, so he is used to some of his antics. But this time, he says it’s gone too far.
Eugene recounted the story of how he was visited by a dove at the window ledge of his office. Originally, he thought nothing of it and continued working. But after a moment, he noticed the dove had on Bird Yeezys. “I was just baffled at the craftsmanship.” Tied to the bird was a message from Kanye West: “I need 1000 doves on stage. I am sending you 2000 Bird Yeezys. Talk soon.”
Although certain sections of the packet were lucid, Lee reports that a large deal of it was completely incomprehensible for a person who was not Kanye West. “At one point in the book, Kanye put in a hyperlink. What am I supposed to do with that?” Lee said, at wits’ end. No matter how things play out, this performance is sure to be one for the ages.
