Op-Ed: Cancel Culture Is Real And Bad Because—Oh Wait, Never Mind, He's Doing Shows Again
Cancel culture is real and it is a putrid stain on our crumbling society.
These toxic takedowns present a palpable threat to artists we know and love, who also just happen to be TERFs, sex offenders, racists, homophobes, and abusers. It's a coincidence!
Why should they have to retreat from the public eye just because they said or did something abhorrent? It’s a real shame that after multiple allegations of sexual assault, my favorite comedian could be erased from—what?
Oh, they’re performing again?
Wait—really?
You're sure? Where?
Oh, that's a good venue.
Okay well, whatever, still. It’s very unfair that these guys may have to hide out for a few months until the press dies down and then promptly return to doing shows at a well-known comedy club.
And what about one of my favorite homophobic actors? It’s an absolute travesty that I will never again see them grace the big sc—say again?
Oh, they’re going to be in a movie?
It's going to be a major blockbuster?
It’s coming out next month? Ooh, on my birthday! Fun.
Okay well, whatever, it’s still VERY, VERY unfair that people are being mean to them online, a place that they can easily avoid since they are very rich and have an assistant to read their Twitter for them.
I am absolutely sick inside thinking about how they will be banned from public spac—come again?
That’s not a thing?
Aside from maybe a few contrite looks, they can go to the grocery store, restaurants, bars, literally anywhere without any real repercussions?
Okay well, it’s still really, really uncool.
