Diversity Win! NBC Just Gave A 10 Episode Order For An All Latinx Sitcom
In Alfredo Rivera’s debut sitcom, he hopes to paint an authentic portrait of a Latinx family. “I wrote The Real Ones to highlight the struggles of real Latinos,” says the Mexican immigrant whose parents are once removed cousins as part of an effort to not damage the “Spaniard” bloodline.
The Real Ones follows an Argentinian family living in Miami’s rough area of Brickell and stars Cuban-American actress Jessica Martin. Martin, who is fresh off a Latinos for Ted Cruz fundraiser tour, is proud to see “the authentic Latinx experience highlighted in media.”
“Only in America can someone like me go from being an immigrant to being a TV star in 2 years but that’s why it’s so amazing here,” says Edwin Cortes, whose family is responsible for 84% of Guatemala’s wealth from harvesting the natural resources from the land they seized from indigenous people during the last civil war.
“In the first season we talk about issues facing Latinos every day: like how all of us often get mistaken for white people just because we all have blond hair and blue eyes. We are really going to go there in this show.” said Rivera.
When asked if the show is going to discuss the complicated Argentinian past of having Nazis and Nazi sympathizers in the country, Rivera said one show can’t encompass all issues but they will consider it.
EDIT: At Jessica’s request we have removed all the accents from her name.
