Confusing! The "B" In Michael B. Jordan Stands For "Basketball"
Michael B. Jordan is on top of the world. He’s starred in movies such as Creed and Black Panther — but things weren’t always easy for the California-born actor. The “B” in his name stands for “Basketball”.
“My parents love basketball, that’s why they named me Michael,” he said.
“We really wanted people to know we meant Michael Jordan, like the one from basketball. In fact, that’s what we originally tried to name him: Michael “Like The One From Basketball” Jordan,” his mother Donna said. “But they said ‘that won’t fit on a license,’ so we settled on Basketball.”
“Before I started using my middle initial, I just went by Michael Jordan. People would get very excited when they’d hear my name, as they thought they were about to meet the great Number 23. Every day in 5th grade when my teacher would take attendance, she’d get to my name and exclaim ‘Oh shit! Here comes Jumpman!!!!’ and every day I’d disappoint her,” he said with a gloom in his eye.
Eventually, it was a desire to escape this prison of disappointment that pushed him to try acting. However, the confusion followed him to his new career.
“Before we realized he could just go by Michael B. Jordan, it was tough.” his agent Jackie K. Chan said. “The casting directors for Friday Night Lights were really jazzed when they heard Michael Jordan was coming in to read for the part of a high school football player, but boy were they pissed when he showed up.”
But in the end, as we all know, things have worked out great for Michael B. Jordan.
“I am happy I found ‘B.’ I am grateful for what the concept of abbreviation has given me, and I am also excited to marry a white woman,” he said.
